Around the world in my desk chair

After viewing hundreds of photo series in one day, my head tends to spin. It gives me the feeling I’ve traveled the world in a day, a bit like a jet lag but then only in my head. We are in the process of pre-screening last month’s 751 submissions for the Viewbook PhotoStory 2010 contest.

It’s very different viewing and screening stories build up of series of images, as opposed to single images. The extra dimension that series of images have, results in an exponentially growing diversity of idea’s, angles and concepts, which are more often discovered between the images than in the images itself. It requires deep concentration and an unprejudiced mind to perceive. Sometimes it’s difficult to empathize with truths of other cultures, where religion, humor and value’s are so very different to our Western culture. I must say I love this work. It makes me fly of my desk chair and wonder away into realistic and made up realities, I discover phenomena, places, cultures and personal views from all around the world.

Viewbook PhotoStory 2009 Exhibition Opening

Last Thursday we opened the Viewbook PhotoStory 2009 Exhibition and celebrated the winning photographic narratives of Francesco Giusty and David Favrod in the Kahmann Gallery in Amsterdam. It was a great evening where the digital event turned physical. It was great to shake hands and speak to so many people face to face. Check out the short video below!

We launched Viewbook PhotoStory 2009, an exciting new global photography contest. All documentary and conceptual photographers around the world are encouranged to submit photographic narratives in the form of self created online galleries, that are judged by the public and an international panel of industry professionals. The first prize winners receive international publications & lifelong subscriptions with a value exceeding $12.000).

The competition is all about the art of shooting a strong series, making a critical selection, determining the right order, writing a description and an appealing title. DUWO House of Music Kick-off

Last week we organized a kick-off evening for the DUWO House of Music project. Residents, relations and media were invited to enjoy our presentation and have a drink with us. A jazz quartet from the Royal Conservatoire moved us physically and emotionally. DUWO House of Music

Today we started communicating the plans of DUWO House of Music. An old brothel will turn into 43 apartments for international conservatoire students. We screwed a 5 by 4 metre large frame at the front of the building and launched the website www.duwo-houseofmusic.nl. This week I will be busy setting up the media release and finishing the concept for the information evening that will be organized in the building 28 October. TodaysArt08 was fantastic! Last Friday and Saturday night The Hague felt like the cultural epicentre of the world, with Compagnie Retouramont dancing buildings vertically and Electroheads componing melodies with self generated lightning, Interactive playgrounds in the City hall and Nouvelle Vague playing the crowds in the Anthon Phillips Theatre.

Ten professional photographers worked with us, capturing 40 of the 200 acts that performed in the city centre of The Hague. After each act the photographers dropped their images at our booth and we directly uploaded selections into a live photostream. The stream ran embedded in todaysart.nl, bright.nl, boomerang.nl and other websites. For the stream we used a regular Viewbook pro account, but with a reversed running script to get the last uploaded images in front of the autoplayed gallery.

My buddy Jos Geffers competed at the National awards in the 'Melkweg' yesterday. With his band T.IF.T he performs rithmic guitar soundscapes that make you loose contact with the ground. Stumbled upon a long post on Techcrunch about new approaches to PR for web startups. The post itself seems to offers some pretty wide open doors, but in the comments there's a funny discussion evolving.

Myself I believe in the holy tryology to get media coverage
1. Good story
2. Ability to build and maintain relations with writers and media
3. Level with your relations and help them out with your story

The art I guess is obviously to make up and write a good story that is backed up by the product or company that you are promoting. A good story triggers imagination, emotion, a bit of dramatizing usually helps with that. Importante to keep things in perspective and get the right message across.

And that should be just one asset of our integrated PR programs. Support the cultures that we aim at and let that speak for itself, plant seeds by sponsoring people, start and participate in discussions on social networks, to name some activities that I think that should be at least on our lists. These activities will give something to write and inform our friends at the newspaper about.

People,

Fresh from a family weekend in the east of the Netherlands, I decided to start sharing some

thoughts and experiences with you. Just a first short personal kickoff post for now. See how this blogger.com works out. The idea is to start sharing work related stuff, like building community sites, promoting webservices, new marketing and communication principals. At the same time get to know a bit about the person behind the rationale.

Today was a sweet day, mothers birthday, brothers and girlfriends all there, a good film at our own private outdoor theatre. Sleeping in a sort of spacecraft sort of cockpit waking up in a hot tub while getting footmassaged by my girlfriend. After a good breakfast got leopard installed on my macbook, which runs all smooth now. All Viewbook files arranged ready to rock it into the next decade. If your weekend was shit, you might already hate me after reading this, but he, I promise you this blog won't be all about sunshine. You will get to read some of the dirt that hits me on the way, don't you worry.

Time to hit the sack, tomorrow early kickstart the week with the people at the agency.
